These are my two secret weapons when it comes to working out in the morning.

Wake Up Metabolism Kick Start Drink

Glass of Water
1 White Tea Bag
1/2 Lemon Juiced
Pinch Cayenne Pepper

Combine all the ingredients in a glass or bottle and set aside overnight. Drink this when you first get up in the morning before your workout.

White tea increases your energy which is just what the Dr ordered first thing in the morning. Research also suggests that it aids in weight-loss by increasing metabolism and encourage the body to burn more fats. The lemon juice in this drink has excellent digestive properties and can ease heartburn, bloating and other digestion problems. It also cleanses and stimulates the liver and kidneys. Cayenne Pepper too has wonderful properties including increasing your metabolism.

Superfood Post Workout Protein Smoothy

200ml Almond Milk
1/2 cup Frozen Blueberries
2 tablespoons Goji Berries
2 tablespoons Pea Protein Isolate Powder
1 teaspoon Spirulina Powder
1 cup Baby Spinach
1 teaspoon Omega 3 Oil Blend (vegan)
1/8 teaspoon Stevia Leaf Powder

Blend all the ingredients and enjoy for breakfast after your workout. This smoothy contains 19g of protein. Many people choose whey protein as their after workout protein source but pea protein isolate could be a good option to consider. Pea protein isolate is hypoallergenic, has no added sugar and is low carb (low GI).

Trust me… this tastes really nice and I usually enjoy it with a slice of rye or rice bread toasted and spread with some raw coconut oil or almond butter.

The Goji berries are packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Blueberries are rich in natural pigment anti-oxidants and vitamin C. Spirulina is a good source of iron, protein and anti-oxidants.

It is important to get enough Protein in your diet and since meat is most people’s source of protein vegetarians need to keep any eye on this. Bodybuilding.com has some good tips to help you with your workout. This is what they have to say about why to take protein after your workout: “protein is used for the production of muscles. Proteins are also used to manufacture hormones, enzymes, cellular messengers, nucleic acids, and immune-system components”. They say, “after a workout is one of the best time to get protein into the body so that the protein can be delivered to your muscles, to begin healing the micro tears (very small tears in the muscle tissue, caused by intense contraction of the muscle during workout) in the muscle”.
